Well, the result would be that no pages at all would be rendered in a
given dvipng run (v1.0-v1.1). Which would be the same as if we chose
not to make dvipng the default type in the first place (minus some
overhead for an empty dvipng run).

We can

1) do a configure test and modify the default image type and dvipng's
   options depending on the version (1.0-1.1 !=3D 1.2-)

2) Use 'dvipng as default image type and --picky mode which would make
   v1.0-v1.1 not render any images.

In case 1) activation of dvipng would amount to choosing it as image
type.

In case 2) activation would amount to upgrading dvipng or removing the
--picky option.

Perhaps it is simpler to amend the manual on using dvipng from within
preview-latex, than to write a version test and modify default values.
