getaddrinfo() related problems

In using Emacs with Gnus, I see frequent failures to look up
hostnames. In particular, news.gmane.org almost always fails.
Reading in other places that the getaddrinfo() implementation in
MacOSX is poor, I applied the following patch to avoid using it.
Things seem much better now - I've not had a single failure since.

Does anyone else see similar problems ?
