  I think it is a common practice to define a variable to hold a face
symbol as well as defining a face whose the name (a symbol) is the same
as this variable name, for its default value.  But I don't think this
is the case for the face 'default'.

  I think the question is: why the code doesn't use the symbol
'default' instead?
