Fontifying particular elements/contents?

I thought I had asked this once before on the list, but if so
I can't find the record of it.
I have a custom schema (i.e. not DocBook or something
widespread), and I'd like to change the display for particular
elements, so that (for example) the contents of <title> tags
appear in italics, the contents of <header> tags appear in
bold, <comment> tags themselves appear in.... This will help
me find my place in a complicated document.
I know this isn't strictly an nxml question, but could someone
explain how to do this? I recall that nxml does fontifying in
a particular way, and I don't know how this affects what I
want to do.
Thanks.
