bug#5265: 23.1.90; vc - can't reread redirected stdin for log message

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug.  If you can, give
a recipe starting from `emacs -Q':


1. emacs -q
2. Open a file
3. C-u C-x v i and then type in a version number, for example, 0.1

I get this error:
