Just downloaded the latest emacs (24.4.1) and built it in a sandbox. Changed
the top-level Makefile $EMACS to point to this 24.4.1 binary. And the same
error message.

I then decided to prove (to myself) that what I was correct about the
previous version working. So I checked out trunk at revision 8678 and it
compiled on both 23/24.
