Aren't you using Emacs 26 or older? Although the MELPA version
has no filter to lockout older Emacsen[1], the official version
currently supports Emacs 27, 28, and 29 (and 30) only[2].

[1] I don't know who maintains the package version, and so I have
  nothing to do for it.
[2] The installer is designed not to work for older Emacsen.
