If I'm not mistaken, Emacs 23 would copy to the clipboard with mouse-1
selection. Now in 24, it just highlights and you will have to do a
separate M-w to get it into the clipboard, or some such.

There was a short discussion here a while back and I think the
justification was meant to align Emacs with other tools that are popular
with the kids.
