Well, you vetoed to the current plan, so I'd say it's your job to at
least list some conditions an acceptable plan would need to fulfill to
be acceptable to you.  These concern things like the problems you want
to see solved, and commit policy.  

Otherwise, this whole process is going to be ultimately frustrating,
painful and fruitless.  (What you're doing is precisely what's going
on in German politics at the moment.  The result is---well, no
results.)

I'm unwilling to give you blanket veto power on the general grounds
that you just don't like something.  (I'd be unwilling to give it to
myself.)

I just talked to them in person and at length.  They confirmed the
impression I'd gotten from their posts: They want to make it work for
Mule, but they need some help.  Hrvoje and you somehow came to the
conclusion that there was no commitment.  This is just plain false.

Hrvoje and you say: We object to this on the grounds (for you, not the
only ones) that Mule doesn't work.  Fine.  That's a reasonable
position to take.  But it's also not an unreasonable position to put
Xft support in now, and fix the Mule stuff later.  You've raised your
objections, and we've accepted them.

But Hrvoje and you keep pretending that your position is *obviously*
the right one, when it isn't.  So can we please have a
reasonably-toned discussion where we're trying to support Eric's and
Matthias's work instead of the frustrating recriminations and yelling
that are going on now?

Looking at the current patch, I disagree that their stuff introduces
additional system complexity that wouldn't also be present with a new
all-singing, all-dancing font configuration system you envision.  Most
of their stuff is purely in the form of additions---they're not going
to make creating the new font configuration system harder than it
already is.  Most of the actual *changes* are in redisplay.

I'll try to work with Eric and Matthias to actually do some work on
font configuration.  Meanwhile, you (Stephen) seem to've already
invested some brainpower into this.  Would you mind making available
what you have?
