Thanks for your reply and your comments---that's what I was asking
for.  A lot I agree with.  Here's where I differ:

It may be a good time, but I don't agree that this should be a
prerequisite for the Xft support to go in.  I think this is largely
orthogonal, and I don't think this will be made more difficult by Xft
support.

I say lets see first what we abstract over; abstract then.
