I disagree as a matter of policy.  There is no way to improve
keymappings if we can't even beta test them because of "backward
compatibility."

Surprising and destructive, yes.  So are lots of things in beta
tests, although normally they're not intentional.

I'm actually neutral on the patch itself, but before the patch is
discussed I think this is a policy issue that should be hashed out
every so often.  The last time was several years ago, and the
composition of the active board has changed dramatically since then.
