I've found the C-z binding annoying. When I forget and type it while under X, my next action is usually a muttered curse. I'd rather C-z do nothing instead of iconifying the window. Iconification seems like the closest analog to the dumb terminal suspend behavior but it hasn't proven to be as useful in practice. If C-z has to be bound to something when running under a window system, 'shell' or 'terminal-emulator' are better choices I think.
