[newbie] Syntax Support

Hi,

I am sorry if this is not the right list to post.

I spent quite a bit of time lately trying to figure
out how to add support for a custom syntax to xemacs. 
The documentation contains only a couple paragraphs in
 about syntax table and they are not very clear to me.

My immediate goal is to highlight raw email message
text:
-------------------
From: value
Subject: <some text>

Body goes here.
>> previous post
>>> another post
-------------------

I know that you'd say that I can use GNUS for
newsreader support and MH for email support, but they
(GNUS) don't provide syntax highlighting outside of
their scope.

Proprietary file formats are another area were it is
nice to be able to write a simple syntax highlighting.
