My main problem is that I don't know what these other hooks are that tramp-efs doesn't handle, yet. I don't know when they are invoked. If somebody who knows what they do could check, that would be great. If memory serves me right, there is also another problem with unified filenames: Something needs to be in core to fetch additional packages. Last time we talked about it, this was handled by EFS, but there were also plans to remove EFS from the XEmacs core and to use some C code (based on wget?) to fetch the packages. In any case, Tramp can be made to easily coexist with EFS in the sense that it is possible to have an XEmacs with EFS but without Tramp, and then later load Tramp, and Tramp will remove the file-name-handler-alist entries installed by EFS and add its own. This is not an aesthetically pleasing solution, but it works. Something that I got confused about is the opinion of the XEmacs community: is it good to have unified filename syntax, or is this a bad thing? If the XEmacs community thinks that unified filenames are bad, then no effort needs to be spent on making Tramp work in that scenario. But if the general consensus is that unified filenames are good, then all problems in the implementation can be worked out, I'm sure. Kai
