Yeah, but what we should do is support URL notation, not the
increasingly delicate app-specific notation.  Sure, scp and rsync also
use this notation, but they _know_ which transport they're going to
use.  Explicit is better than implicit.

Once we've got URLs properly supported (including schemes for
supporting arbitrary transports such as rsync), then we can think
about backward compatibility.
