need help building

I have a newly installed RedHat 8 with Gnome but when I
run configure it doesn't find X.
What's the solution?
INSTALL mentions something about 
--site-includes and --site-libraries but doesn't tell me what
to specify for those.
How can I find out what other things besides X and gnome 
to mention in the configure arguments?
