I don't know where your post came from ... it got hung up in
XEmacs.org somewhere, that's clear, but why I don't know....

display-time is known to cause problems in some versions of XEmacs;
ISTR it has been patched recently, but can't give a reference
offhand.  You might try updating to 21.4.17.  I will try to replicate
later, but wanted to respond immediately since the mail system hangup
is probably my bad.
