XEmacs 20.4 does not support features required by the currently
supported perl mode (cperl).  There is no hope that perl mode will
ever work satisfactorily (to my mind) in XEmacs 20.4, even if you
could find a way to fix this.  I strongly suggest you upgrade to
XEmacs 21.4 and use cperl mode.
