Probably not.  I don't think QUIT is allowed in the regexp code.  You
could run the compile directly from a shell buffer or by using M-x
shell-command, not M-x compile.

I have no knowledge of VNC.  I can say that because XEmacs tries to
support multiple consoles of wildly differing characteristics, several
of which (eg, GTK+, and MS Windows) believe they are the only display
in the world, it does not behave well when it doesn't have a console.
I don't know whether "VNC not currently connected to any display"
would look like "no console" to XEmacs or not.

Then those are the processes that have been started by XEmacs.  Period.
