disabling esc as prefix

Could anyone suggest how I could disable ESC from being a prefix? I tried unsetting it or deleting esc-map but this does not work. I want ESC to be a regular key that I can bind some function to. But of course I don't want to lose my M-key bindings too, i.e. I want Meta to work as before. Is this possible in lisp at all? Or only by patching the XEmacs source?
