It is like screen just for X, VNC starts a Xserver on the host and a client
can then connect to it, and when the client disconnects, the programs
running under VNC doesn't know of that they just don't receive any input
from keyboard or mice.
So when the client reconnects the X server is most often at the state it was
when disconnecting. As if you had physically left your computer and returned
later.
