secure ftp ?

Hello !

I use Xemacs on MacOS X (Darwin). I would like to know if it is 
possible to use (and HOW ??) a kind of secure ftp to open files on a 
remote host.
I use at present the "standard" ftp available on Xemacs 
(/username&host/dir/file) to open files that are in the "same network" 
than my computer (I mean at my work place). But if I want to open them 
from home, with a ADSL connexion, shortly "from outside this work 
network", it does not work because the remote host only allows safe ftp.
How can I do ? I really need it !
