Have you had any luck with this?  It sounds really weird to me.

If you haven't, please post a bug report (use M-x report-xemacs-bug).

xemacs-news is supposed to gatewayed to comp.emacs.xemacs, but due to
"technical difficulties" at our ML host, is not.  c.e.x is much higer
traffic than xemacs-news.

That said, this is probably a bug; there's no reason I can see why the
gnome version should be different from the non-gnome version.

You could try running xemacs -no-site-file to keep the Debian standard
deviance from getting loaded, and see if it persists.  If not, I'd
ping the Debian maintainer, as well as doing M-x report-xemacs-bug.
