Thanks, David and Giacomo. I hadn,t installed the ispell (aspell)
executable. After installing ispell and resetting the path, ispell works
fine. Thanks again.

 the above message wasn't issued by xemacs, but by the command
 interpreter...

 you need to download and install the ispell program, the stuff in
 .../lisp/ispell/ is lisp code used by xemacs to feed data into the
 ispell executable and parse its output
