new version of ben-mule-21-5 "bamboo"; please test, merge is coming soon

i've synched up to a very recent snapshot of the main branch, gotten everything
to compile nicely, and fixed various other problems along the way w.r.t.
unicode-encapsulation.  it's all checked in, so please take a look and comment!

still to go is one more exhaustive build [not very likely to find much at this
point] and looking at the bug reports i've received.  i'll fix the ones that are
important and leave the other ones till later -- next comes merging back into
the main branch.

since what i've got is pretty similar to what's going to be merged into the main
branch, i'd appreciate some volunteers to bang on the code a bit.  it's also
going to be changing a bit over the next few days or weeks as i fix bugs and
check them in, but nothing major will be going down.
