gnuclient / display special characters in tty

Hi,

I have an annoying problem with the display of I18n stuff. I usually
start my xemacs session on my workstation at work under X where
everything works fine, i.e. special characters like umlaut etc. are
displayed correctly. When I want to connect to my running xemacs
session using gnuclient from a non-X connection, i.e. a terminal,
however, I cannot input or display the special characters.

Any ideas how this problem can be solved?

I'm using xemacs-mule version 21.4.18; December 2005 from Ubuntu 6.06.
