Latin-unity is independent of Unicode.  It will take advantage of
Unicode support if you have it, and the tables are generated by using
Unicode support.  But you don't need it (you can even build without
it, I supply a prebuilt char-table, but you'd probably need to hack
the Makefile).

Oh, and there's a cool new interface in there, too---if you enter a
charset where a coding system is expected, it will try to guess the
coding system, and vice versa.  I need to abstract that and build up
the tables of guesses, but the silly non-standard naming has annoyed
me for a long time.

Unfortunately, I can't give you a hint on _how_ Mule got itself
confused.  It's such a tarpit....
