I couldn't have expressed this better myself :-) I know exactly what you're talking about. Believe it or not, Quail *is* my daily input method. After spending years screaming and wanting to fix it without finding the time, I ended up getting used to its brokeneness. Now it's almost instinctively that I turn off my input method before undo'ing operations, switching across buffers, spelling words and so on...
