I just did an experiment with MinGW on a Windows XP box.  It started
out good in the initial part of ./configure run. Unfortunately there
were errors before it ran to completion. So it was not as easy as to
just drop in MinGW and configure.

Plus, I did not look very thoroughly, but it did not seem like all
extra libraries we require can be downloaded through the MinGW
installer.
