Toolbar

When my Xemacs comes up, the area where the toolbar icons once were 
contains only a bunch of thin lines - as tho' the bar had been defined 
somewhere but the icons were unavailable. 
Please advise, how are the icons for the toolbar located, and where is 
the toolbar initialized - assuming an init.el file that is slightly 
customized from the sample,init.el?
 When I first installed, the toolbar was there.  After "correcting" some 
path problems that were biting me in other situations, blech - they're gone.
