old-assoc is an obsolete function, not a variable.  This is probably
either a JDE or JDEbug bug, or perhaps you have mixed versions of the
packages.

What does M-x list-load-path-shadows RET say?  If it says anything
about anything except "alist" (which has been moved into core from
APEL) or "build-report" (from core to xemacs-base), you should try
removing the unneeded ones.
