Hi,
trouble with "M-x shell" for cygwin, plse help.
While I have used cygwin with native XEmacs-NT on other machines before, a
virgin install, XEmacs-NT version 21.4.13 on Win2000, gives me:
Popup window: bash.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows
XEmacs Scracthc buffer: Process bash unknown signal
MiniBuffer: c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT\
Recent keystrokes:
misc-user misc-user misc-user misc-user M-x s h e l
l RET button1 button1up misc-user
Recent minibuffer messages (most recent first):
c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT\
Loading shell...done
Loading shell...
Loading cus-edit...done
Loading customization dependencies...done

The directory c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT\ is not
empty, but final two directories are lower case on my machine reading:
c:\Program Files\Common Files\System\mapi\1033\nt\
My testing init.el contains only these http://cygwin.com/faq recommended
settings:
;; This assumes that Cygwin is installed in C:\cygwin (the
;; default) and that C:\cygwin\bin is not already in your
;; Windows Path (it generally should not be).
;;
(setq exec-path (cons "C:/cygwin/bin" exec-path))
(setenv "PATH" (concat "C:\\cygwin\\bin;" (getenv "PATH")))
;;
;; NT-emacs assumes a Windows command shell, which you change
;; here.
;;
(setq process-coding-system-alist '(("bash" . undecided-unix)))
(setq shell-file-name "bash")
(setenv "SHELL" shell-file-name)
(setq explicit-shell-file-name shell-file-name)
;;
;; This removes unsightly ^M characters that would otherwise
;; appear in the output of java applications.
;;
(add-hook 'comint-output-filter-functions
'comint-strip-ctrl-m)
thanks a bunch for Your help
Christian
