Well, Dired just tries to use what it's dealt by the OS's native
directory lister, for better or worse.  (In hindsight, I think this
was a terrible idea by the original authors, but there we are.)  So
no, this isn't easily doable with the current Dired.  I'll add it to
my list of feature requests, though.
