The problem is that cygwin introduces an alien path syntax to windows which is a bad idea in my opinion. Unless you have specific needs, you can find most of the Gnu tools from the gnu-win32 project on SourceForge. If you need Unix under Windows, use VMWare, at least you'll get the real thing.
