mutliline input newlines replaced with spaces

This may be considered a feature request more than a bug although the
typical behavior in other irc clients is to send each line
separately and not replace the newlines with spaces.  Forgive me if
this is a faq but I don't see one linked from http://www.zenirc.org
nor archives of these mailing lists.  I certainly see how someone may
prefer newlines converted to spaces, the behavior should ideally be
configured with a customizable variable.

Lisp hack to correct appreciated.  I'll see if I can figure something
out in spite of my modest lisp skills and if I get something I guess
I'll post back here.
