Malaya Madness 2014 AAR

I had a great time at Malaya Madness 2014 and plan to return to Malaya 
Madness 2015! A friendlier lot of ASLers are not to be found but these 
guys can play. I enjoyed all four of my games and opponents, went 2-2, 
and loved every minute of it.

Singapore's David Leong and I had a barnburner of a good time playing 
145 Shanghai in Flames. It was only David's tenth scenario but David 
knew the rules cold. Unfortunately for David, his dice were in the same 
state (cold) and my dice were as hot as Shanghai (which burned quite 
nicely for us, anyway, spreading to more than a dozen hexes). David was 
not able to recover from the dicing I gave him on turn 1 but he played 
the scenario through to the end like the classy guy he is.

My next game was 147 A Stiff Fight with Manila's Vlad See. In another 
fantastic game it all came down to the last close combat dice roll of 
the game. With his last intrepid Gurhka squad's stubborn survival on the 
last turn of my best hand to hand melee attack Vlad earned the victory 
in a nail biter.

Point Clare New Zealand's Pete Palmer and I next played J128 Opium Hill. 
Once again the dice were kind to me but cruel to my opponent. Pete had 
perfectly positioned his leader directed MMG up on the only hill, 
dominating the IJA entry zones. Pete's first shot broke the MMG and my 
armor assaulting IJA moved on in relative safety. A few more equally bad 
dice rolls for Pete and great dice rolls for me whittled down Pete's 
Malayan and British troops, delayed his AFV, and Xed his MMG repair 
roll. As we neared the end game Pete graciously conceded.

My final Malaya Madness 2014 game was with Wanaka New Zealand's Ian 
Percy playing J103 Lenin's Sons. Ian's masterful play delayed my German 
advance through the woods while shutting down any attempt to run up the 
open ground on the other half of the board. Ian's successful trade of 
space for time all but guaranteed I would not be able to take the 
victory buildings by game end so as the tournie ended I conceded.

Big thanks to the Singapore and greater southeast Asian ASL community 
for a great tournament. Special thanks to tourney organizer, director, 
and inaugural champion George Bates who made sure everyone had a great time.

Singapore in February was wonderful and given the shopping, wonderful 
beaches, and warm weather it will make an outstanding winter vacation 
for North American and European ASLers and their families next year. See 
you there.
