VECTOR: Asteroids score cheat

From everything I have read, you are supposed to be
able to hide in the scores at the top of the screen in
Asteroids version 1, and cannot be hit by saucer fire
(or asteroids if you read some pages).  I am unable to
do this on either the real hardware or MAME.  Can
anyone verify that this actually works and if so, are
there any tricks to it?
