Law 11 says the right to rectification "may" be forfeited if the Director is not called. Since it says "may", the right is forfeited only if that is in the interest of equity; that is, if a player may have gained through subsequent action. In this situation, if the defenders are good players (I don't know the standard of play in the Western Australian State Championship), I would deny the adjustment because opening leader gained the opportunity for a double shot by not calling the Director at the proper time. He could have changed the spade lead to a club lead before the opening lead was faced. Instead, he got to beat the contract on a spade lead, and if that failed, could still beat the contract on a club lead. I would allow the adjustment for weaker players who might not be familiar with their rights, assuming that a club lead would be more likely given the correct information. I would not impose a procedural penalty on the declaring side in any case. Yes, they are supposed to call the Director when correcting misinformation, but this doesn't happen in practice, particularly for minor cases. (And this 3C bid did show a club control; it just more specifically showed a singleton or void, not the ace.) A pair was bidding towards a slam in spades. There was no opposition bidding. During the auction, one of the declaring side bid 3C, alerted by his partner and described on request as first or second round control in clubs. The auction ended in 6S. The opening lead was made face down then the 3C bidder corrected his partners explanation to shortage (splinter) in clubs. The opening lead of a spade was faced and 12 tricks duly rolled in. The Director had not been called at this stage. The contract however went off on a club lead….. And so the Director was called. Would you adjust? If after consideration of Law 11 you would adjust, Would you consider a failure to call the director a serious error. In the event that this went to appeal, how would your committee rule Best wishes bill kemp _______________________________________________ Blml mailing list [email protected] http://lists.rtflb.org/mailman/listinfo/blml -- David Grabiner [email protected] (permanent Email; put this in your address book) [email protected] (valid as long as I am with Verizon) _______________________________________________ Blml mailing list [email protected] http://lists.rtflb.org/mailman/listinfo/blml
