[snip] Richard Hills: Australia used to have the same regulation. However, our powers-that-be noti= ced that the non-opening side were disadvantaged by the so-called =E2=80=9Cs= elf-alerting=E2=80=9D nature of the Namyats convention. Hence the ABF modified our self-alerting reg to specify that all conventiona= l opening bids - whether or not past 3NT - must be alerted. So if Herman and his partner had been teleported by a TARDIS to an Aussie br= idge tournament, then the partner would have mistakenly alerted Herman=E2=80= =99s 4D opening bid, thus giving UI to Herman and MI to the opponents.
