Actually those were the good old days. The library
would eventually get them for you. There are too many walled 
gardens now. Research is under seige in new ways that 
reveal the electronic information revolution to be a mixed 
blessing.

Anyway a good side is it re-humanises discourse. 
I email authors, ask for a copy of their paper (which any 
true scientist is always eager to supply), discuss the 
approaches and compare ideas, swap PDF's of other papers.
That's how real research gets done these days, even if
nobody admits it.
