  There's an article "Ropes as Constraints" by Anton Knyazyev in Game 
Physics Pearls

that offers a method for simulating inelastic ropes. It differs from the 
usual Jakobsen Verlet relaxation method in that it solves the rope as a 
single system of rigid components rather than a set of point masses with 
distance constraints that are solved iteratively.
