Oy, freakin' language lawyers.  I posted to comp.std.c about this, and 
they followups basically focused on these two things:

- reading a float back as an int is ILLEGAL!!!  UNCLEAN, WE CAST THEE 
OUT!!!

- I said "type alias" when the correct terminology is "type punning".  
I'm such a retard.

Of course, no one actually answered the question.  I restated, I'll 
see what nits they pick with my new question. *sigh*
