This isn't about games, but I couldn't resist on providing a link to a 
Velocity 2010 conference presentation notes by Theo Schlossnagle of 
Scalable Internet Architectures fame about, well, Scalable
Internet Architectures:

After the intial hand-waving, the presentation is much about 
understanding the problem in the context of performance and scalability 
trade-offs.
