Just out of curiosity, what has "gone bad" with the Earth?

Mark: Not the Earth itself, we people who destroy it and each other out of 
greed in the name of progress.  I really think that people are convinced we 
can do better, and maybe if we live on the moon things will be better, and 
maybe if we reach out into space with settlers, things will be better, but 
the heart of man is not up to it.  Things don't get better except for the 
rich who extort the poor for their wealth, or people who kill to advance 
their political ends.

If we don't have fair employment here on earth, why would it be better for 
people in space at the mercy of those employers?  But this was not my theme, 
in any case.  I am simply questioning the present wisdom of man missions.  I 
accept there are dangers - but I wonder how justified man missions really 
are given the present situation.
