Bill and all, I am all for the police acting sensibly and in accord with the rule of law, and always have been. Shooting to kill is not, to me, the best and wisest course when it is based upon vague feelings and rationalized with assertions of probable cause after the fact. "To act" need not automatically mean shooting to kill, amazingly enough. This is not essentially disarming the police; it is a call for return to sanity, although I admit that these days that is the province of lefty extremists. Like you (hope you're sitting down now) I wish to avoid the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Unlike you, I see shooting to kill as more likely, not less, to bring it about. It is also an endorsement of the terrorist mentality. If, as your argument below suggests, the police are always right by definition, then there is no hope for exchange, but I am glad that at least you have clarified that acting in a suspicious manner means a spontaneous death sentence for the unlucky. What would Ben Franklin think about that! cheers, Clark -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] on behalf of William Highfield Sent: Thu 7/28/2005 10:50 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [CAT23-Achat] Different approach by the West Mids police Clark, By saying the cops should not act when they feel they have probable cause, you're essentially disarming them. Now I wasn't there and neither were you. I'm giving the British police the benefit of the doubt until proven different when they say that they felt the man was a threat. You are doing exactly the opposite when you suggest that the performed a "street execution". The next time this situation occurs - and I'm sure it will - I only hope and pray that some cop doesn't hesitate because he doesn't want to be accused of performing a street execution and instead, the suspect manages to detonate his bomb killing thousands. I know to many on the left think police are all jackbooted fascists, but I cannot understand the need to accuse these cops of performing a street execution when they had a suspect acting in a completely suspcious manner in a very tense situation and they did what they thought was the right thing to do. -- Bill Highfield St Cloud, Florida, USA!
