He was working two jobs here and sending bucketloads of squids back home to
Brazil from what I've heard. His original visa was a student visa which
lasts 18 months and allows the holder to work part time to support themself.
He wa an electrician I think and I know for a fact that the money in London
for sparkys at the moment is very very good and they are highly in demand.
So it was probably worth the risk of staying illegally compared with the
huge difference in what he could earn in Brazil.  I've also read that it had
been widely reported in Brazilian newspapers that that the British
authorities have been doing visa checks at tube stations.  Doesn't make it
right, but I think it explains a lot.
