Nature can kick us in the goolies sometimes but then nature also usually has it's own protective box/cup in place to soften the blow. In this case, the miles of swampland that will take the brunt of the water when the Mississipi floods. But 20 odd years of development on the swampland have removed natures natural defence for New Orleans. Sure, it was assumed that the levees would replace it as a defensive barrier but that has proved misguided. It's time for developers and planners and governement regulatory agencies to seriously review their thinking. And this is by no means only a criticism of the US, the UK government needs to have a good look at it's huge plans for developing the Thames gateway, much of which is several metres under sea level. ------------------------ Yahoo!
