My own personal opinion is that (1) capital punishment takes too long to carry out to be effective as a "deterent". They need to speed up the process. (2) capital punishment is used in sentencing WAY too often. The death penalty needs to be reserved for heinous crimes. "Tookie" Williams murdered four people in cold blood and is the founder of a street gang where in order to be admitted to the gang, you had to commit a violent crime on someone. He clearly deserved the death penalty. Many others, however, do not. Case in point, we had a 17 year old kill his mother and father and shoot his sister. He showed no remorse, hell, he BRAGGED about it on camera as they were hauling him away. While he should get the death penalty, if it were up to me, I'd put his rear end in solitary confinement with a noose hanging from the ceiling and play his sisters heart wrenching 9-1-1 call in a continuous loop 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until he hung himself. Or until he died of old age, whichever came first. (3) I think many death penalty opponents have a legitamate argument. Unfortunately, they often hang out with utter morons on the left . Tookie Williams by all accounts was a waste of human flesh. For Hollywood leftists and so-called civil rights leaders to argue that he's a changed man, that he writes children's books, or that he was innocent (?!) is beyond the pale. It is IRRELEVANT whether he was a changed man, or that he now writes children's books. He clearly was guilty as hell, and to argue otherwise is sheer idiocy and proof that those involved had neither looked into the facts, nor seen the pictures and testimony of his victims and witnesses. Death penalty opponents need to stay away from the nutjobs just as abortion opponents need to keep their distance from the clinic bombers. They do not, however, and I saw many signs saying "Tookie was innocent" along aside posters that said "the death penalty is morally wrong". Frankly, I'm in favor of locking criminals up for life of hard labor, putting them to sleep nightly with recordings of their victims until they decided to kill themselves. But then, I've been the victim of a violent crime (robbed with a knife to my throat) when I was 16, and when I see the photos of that young man who Tookie nailed with a shotgun in the back of the head, I think but for the grace of God that might have been me. -- Bill Highfield St Cloud, Florida, USA!
