The victims, Hikmat and Samira Sammak =96 like many Iraqi Christians =96 ha= d left the capital and gone to live in the north. Tragically, they had just= returned briefly to Baghdad to finalise the sale of their home and furnitu= re. Two weeks ago, Christian brothers Saad and Raad Hannah were shot dead in th= eir car workshop in Mosul. The incident followed the assassination of two o= ther Christians by gunmen who burst into their Mosul home. These raids come after the hostage siege at a Baghdad church on 31 October = that left more than 50 people dead. The Islamic State of Iraq =96 an Al-Qae= da front group =96 claimed responsibility for that attack and threatened fu= rther violence. They said that the "killing sword will not be lifted" and t= hat Christians everywhere were "legitimate targets". Leaving in waves As the situation becomes increasingly perilous, Christian families are leav= ing Baghdad and Mosul =96 either fleeing the country altogether or heading = in waves to the northern cities of Erbil and Sulaimaniyah in the semi-auton= omous region of Kurdistan. About 500 families are reported to be on the mov= e to the Kurdish region. The refugees leave behind their homes, possessions and work.
