Of course, unpredictability, carried to the extreme, is also generally a losing proposition, and is really only a different kind of predictability.  The key is knowing when to be predictable or unpredictable.  Timing is everything.

  It doesn't matter if it's Spring 1901 or Fall 1910 ... if you become 
  predictable, you WILL lose. Diplomacy and poker have a lot in common. :-)
